How the Goderich Chess Club handles information on this website.

The Goderich Chess Club ("we", "us") is a non-profit community chess club in Goderich, Ontario, Canada. This policy explains what information is collected through this website, how it is used, and how you can contact us about it.

1. Information the club itself collects

This website has no user accounts, no advertising, and no analytics tracking. We do not sell, rent, or trade personal information.

  • Email correspondence. If you email us (to join the mailing list, ask a question, arrange a merchandise or book purchase, or request a photo removal), we receive your email address and whatever information you choose to include. We use it only to respond to you and, if you have asked to join the mailing list, to send club updates. You can unsubscribe from the mailing list at any time by emailing us.
  • Theme preference. Your light/dark theme choice is stored in your own browser (localStorage) so the site remembers it on your next visit. It never leaves your device and we have no access to it.
  • Purchases and donations. Merchandise, book sales, and donations are arranged by email and settled in person or by other agreed methods. We keep only the information needed to complete the arrangement and do not use it for any other purpose.

2. Website hosting

This site is hosted on GitHub Pages. Like most web hosts, GitHub automatically logs certain technical information — including visitors' IP addresses — for security and operational purposes. These logs are controlled by GitHub, not by the club; we do not receive or review them. GitHub's handling of this data is described in GitHub's own privacy statement.


3. Photographs

Our gallery and news pages may include photos taken at club meetings, tournaments, and events.

  • We aim to obtain permission from the people we photograph before publishing their image, and permission from a parent or guardian before publishing an identifiable image of a minor.
  • We avoid publishing full names or other identifying details alongside photos.
  • If a photo of you (or your child) appears on this site and you would like it removed or blurred, email us at the address below and we will take care of it promptly. You do not need to explain why.

4. Links to other websites

This site links to third-party services such as Facebook, Instagram, Chess.com, and our sponsors' websites. When you follow a link, you leave our site and are governed by that service's own terms and privacy practices, which we do not control. We encourage you to review their policies.


5. Your choices and requests

You may ask us at any time to:

  • remove your email address from our mailing list;
  • tell you what information we hold about you and correct or delete it; or
  • remove or blur a photo of you or your child.

Just email us and we will respond as soon as we reasonably can.


6. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. If a future change involves collecting information in a significantly new way, we will explain that on the site before doing so.
